Intuitive Based Leadership

Intuitive based leadership is an approach I use in my advisory and coaching business that helps executives understand the key characteristics of outstanding performers in business – always asking questions, believe their subordinates have the answers, praise others, look for what’s right with ideas and situations vs. what’s wrong, they are curious like a three year old, have an endless amount of energy, etc.   I could go on and on. We’ve all have known people like this. Haven’t we?  Their style is different. They are not autocratic or “my way or the highway” types. They do not use fear as a motivator in an organization. They don’t always have the answers. They have a lot more questions. They are not bonus seekers although surely they seek just reward. They are not purely numbers driven although they value analytics to an extent.

Looking at both what they do and what they don’t do, clear patterns emerge. The outstanding performer has learned to integrate both his highly developed analytical capabilities, his smarts, his problem finding and solving ability, which we’ve all been trained to do, with his gut. His intuition. Most of us are so well trained at problem solving, which involves finding what’s wrong, that our ability to tap into our intuition is hampered, a lot. Why? The intuition is engaged when we are looking to complete a picture, create an ideal, looking for perfection. If we are always looking for the problem or what’s wrong we never engage ourselves in the “what’s right or what’s ideally right” question and hence never engage our intuition. In fact, we have learned to not trust our intuition probably as a child when we’ve sensed something was wrong but were told “you shouldn’t feel that way”, an invalidation of the intuition. There are multiple examples of how this works. But some leaders have managed to blend the best of both worlds. They are usually unencumbered by the need to find what’s wrong, as,  for whatever reason, usually through upbringing but also by learning, they did not acquire a “critical” attitude towards life. They were allowed to express, to talk about ideas and feelings in a non critical environment. How different is that than what we all know about todays business world? Imagine the power of ideas this type of environment can bring to a business!

This intuitive approach can be taught but first people need to realize where they are today, how to break down barriers to performance and then how to emulate and internalize the characteristics of outstanding performers.  And, as usual, it starts at the top of the company, the division, department as the leader sets the cultural stage for others.
